DeepSeek Outage Raises Concerns Over Platform Stability

China’s popular AI chatbot DeepSeek faced its longest outage to date, remaining offline for more than seven hours overnight and affecting users across regions.

According to outage-tracking platform Downdetector, users first reported issues on Sunday evening, with DeepSeek acknowledging the problem at 9:35 PM.

Although the platform initially marked the issue as resolved within two hours, disruptions reappeared and persisted until 10:33 AM the following day.

The company has not yet disclosed the cause of the outage. Despite maintaining nearly 99% operational uptime since launching its R1 model in January 2025, this prolonged disruption has raised concerns about system resilience.

DeepSeek gained global attention earlier this year when its AI models triggered a sell-off in Silicon Valley tech stocks, fuelling speculation about shifting dynamics in the artificial intelligence sector.

However, its models still trail leading systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude in scale and capability.

Recently, US-based AI firm Anthropic accused DeepSeek and other Chinese firms of extracting capabilities from its Claude model through a process known as distillation.

The company alleged that thousands of fraudulent accounts were used to generate millions of interactions for training purposes.

Anthropic warned that such practices could lead to models lacking robust safety safeguards, potentially enabling misuse in cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns, and surveillance.

It stressed that the situation poses broader security concerns, urging swift action as the window to address such risks remains limited.
