Centre May Issue Notice To WhatsApp Over Username Feature

The Central government is considering issuing a notice to Meta-owned WhatsApp over its upcoming global username feature amid concerns that it could facilitate impersonation, fraud and misinformation.

Government sources said authorities have expressed serious reservations about the feature and fear it could face misuse similar to that of platforms that already support username-based communication.

Officials believe messaging platforms must ensure that newly introduced features do not create opportunities for cybercrime or identity fraud. They stressed that companies should remain accountable if their products enable impersonation or the spread of misleading information.

WhatsApp plans to introduce usernames that will allow users to communicate with individuals, businesses, family members and friends without revealing their mobile numbers.

Meta said the feature is designed to strengthen user privacy by allowing contact through a unique username instead of a phone number.

While the feature enhances privacy, cybersecurity experts have cautioned that fraudsters could exploit usernames to impersonate trusted individuals or organisations. They warned that robust anti-abuse systems will be essential to safeguard millions of users in India.

Meta stated that users will soon be able to choose unique usernames similar to those available on social media platforms. It added that only people who know a user’s exact username will be able to contact them.

Telegram and Signal have offered similar username-based communication for years.

Indian regulations require messaging platforms to remain linked to verified mobile numbers.

Under the Telecom Cyber Security Rules, 2024, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) enforces strict SIM-binding requirements to combat digital fraud.

Entrepreneur Ankur Warikoo also raised concerns over fake usernames resembling public figures or businesses. In a post on X, he warned that the feature could become ‘a disaster’ in India unless WhatsApp establishes effective safeguards against misuse.

In a country such as India, this could be a disaster, if the right anti-abuse systems are not set up by WhatsApp.
