YouTube has announced a major update to the way it handles artificial intelligence-generated content, introducing automatic labels for videos containing significant photorealistic AI elements, even if creators fail to disclose them manually.
The platform said the move aims to improve transparency around synthetic media as AI-generated videos become increasingly advanced and harder to distinguish from real footage.
YouTube said the labels will apply to content significantly altered or generated using AI that could mislead viewers.
The platform can now automatically detect certain AI-generated videos and apply labels even if creators fail to disclose them.
For long-form videos, labels will appear below the video player, while YouTube Shorts will display them directly on the video.
YouTube said the stricter rules mainly target photorealistic AI content, while lightly edited or animated videos will receive less prominent disclosures.
The company also confirmed that videos created using tools like Veo and Dream Screen will permanently carry AI labels.
Creators can request a review through YouTube Studio if they believe their content has been wrongly flagged as AI-generated.
The update comes as major digital platforms face increasing pressure to strengthen disclosure standards surrounding synthetic media and AI-generated videos.
Rapid advancements in generative AI technology have raised concerns globally over misinformation, manipulated visuals, and the growing difficulty in distinguishing authentic footage from artificially created content.
YouTube said the changes form part of its broader effort to build trust, improve transparency, and help viewers better understand the nature of the content they watch on the platform.
