The government on Saturday underscored the strategic need to develop artificial intelligence anchored in Indian languages, domestic datasets and national regulatory standards.
It asserted that AI now shapes governance, economic competitiveness and citizen services. Therefore, India must ensure that innovation reflects its societal priorities.
As the country advances its ambition to become a global digital leader, policymakers are prioritising AI systems that are home-grown, inclusive and tailored to Indian realities.
Officials stated that models trained on Indian languages and contextual data will make technology accessible to millions.
They stressed that relevance and reach depend on linguistic and cultural alignment.
Sarvam AI has emerged as a significant contributor in this domain. The firm is building foundational AI models designed specifically for India’s linguistic diversity, enterprise ecosystem and governance requirements.
It has developed, deployed and governed its full-stack AI platform entirely within India. This approach reduces reliance on overseas infrastructure.
Indigenous AI Growth Push
At the India AI Impact Summit 2026, Union Minister Amit Shah highlighted Sarvam AI as a model of India’s technological potential.
He said the company demonstrates why the future favours India. He added that such innovation supports the vision of Viksit Bharat by empowering citizens through accessible technology.
Sarvam AI ranks among 12 organisations selected under the Innovation Centre pillar of the IndiaAI Mission.
The initiative focuses on creating indigenous foundational AI models. The government has extended financial and computational assistance worth Rs 246.72 crore to the company.
Authorities aim to bolster technological sovereignty and promote equitable digital expansion through this support.
The company is developing large language and speech models customised for Indian public service applications.
Its portfolio includes ‘Bulbul’, a text-to-speech system available in 11 Indian languages with 39 voice variants.
‘Saaras’ converts speech to text across all 22 scheduled languages. It processes telephony audio and code-mixed conversations.
Another system, ‘Vision’, enables document comprehension in over 22 Indian languages. It can interpret mixed scripts and handwritten content.
By engineering such India-centric tools, Sarvam AI seeks to resolve longstanding barriers in multilingual communication and accessibility.
Its platforms aim to strengthen voice interfaces, document analysis and citizen-oriented digital services across the country.
