UPI grow in popularity across India, the number of accidental transactions, such as sending money to the wrong person, is also on the rise.

India's daily Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions rose to 596 million in April from 590 million in March, NPCI data showed.

NPCI data shows UPI transactions surged to 18.3 billion in March, marking a 13.59% increase from February's 16.11 billion.

Professor Carlos Montes of Cambridge University said UPI offers key lessons for countries adopting digital payments.

UPI transactions reached an all-time high of 16.73 billion in December 2024, marking an 8% increase from the 15.48 billion transactions recorded in November 2024.

NPCI International Payments (NIPL), which is responsible for NPCI's homegrown payment products globally, is expanding the reach UPI to new countries in 2025.
