West Indies Cricket Mourns Loss of Cricket Legend Joe Solomon At 93
Former West Indies cricketer Joe Solomon passed away at the age of 93 on Saturday. Renowned for his role in the famous tied Test against Australia in 1960 at the Gabba, Solomon played 27 Tests for the West Indies from 1958 to 1965, amassing 1326 runs at an average of 34.
Despite making his first-class debut at 26, Solomon quickly established himself in the squad. His initial three innings for the West Indies were centuries, including notable performances against Jamaica, Barbados, and the touring Pakistan. His immediate impact earned him a spot in the team against India, where he scored an unbeaten 100 in his fourth Test in Delhi.

Solomon’s defining moment came in the tied Test against Australia. With six runs needed off the final eight-ball over and three wickets remaining, Australia seemed poised for victory. However, quick dismissals of Richie Benaud and Wally Grout left them needing one run off two balls with a lone wicket in hand. Solomon’s accurate throw from square leg caught Ian Meckiff short of his crease, resulting in the first-ever tied Test.
While Solomon’s batting in that series left a lasting impression, the second Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground added a touch of controversy.
