Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli has rejoined the squad in South Africa after a brief leave of absence. According to reports, Kohli spent time in London during his break, with plans communicated in advance to the team management. A senior BCCI official stated that Kohli’s trip to London was pre-planned, and he did not participate in the intra-squad practice matches before the first Test.
The official clarified, “Virat Kohli wasn’t going to play that game. The team management was aware of his plan and schedule, and it isn’t something that happened overnight or due to a family emergency. Look at the player in question; it’s Virat Kohli. He is very well planned regarding these things, and his London trip was communicated and planned well in advance.”
Kohli had multiple training sessions with the team before departing for London on December 19. He returned to join the Test squad in Centurion and is expected to resume practice ahead of the first Test starting on December 26.
In the South African camp, head coach Shukri Conrad expressed confidence that India would face challenges in the upcoming Test series, despite his frontline pacers Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi returning to full fitness. Both pacers, who missed the white-ball leg due to injuries, were seen bowling at full intensity in a training session at Supersport Park.
Conrad commented on their readiness, saying, “They will be fresh and firing. I am always a firm believer in freshness.” Although Rabada and Ngidi haven’t had match practice, Conrad remains optimistic about their performance, stating, “It would have been ideal had they got some mileage in the legs by playing First-Class matches, but that’s life. You have got to find a way. But I am not bothered that they will be undercooked for the game.”
