West Indies delivered a composed yet explosive batting effort to reach 195/4 against India in a must-win Super Eights encounter of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at Eden Gardens.
Having been asked to bat first, Shai Hope and Roston Chase negotiated the early overs carefully and constructed a valuable opening stand exceeding fifty — the first such partnership against India in this edition.
Hope contributed 32 from 33 deliveries before Varun Chakaravarthy dismissed him, ending their 66-run alliance.
Chase continued confidently, mixing authoritative strokes with smart placement to keep the scoreboard ticking. Shimron Hetmyer then raised the tempo sharply, hammering 27 off just 12 balls, including a pair of towering sixes that shifted momentum.
Jasprit Bumrah restored India’s hopes by claiming two wickets in the 12th over. Hetmyer edged behind, and shortly afterwards Chase departed for a brisk 40 off 25 balls.
Hardik Pandya added to the pressure by removing Sherfane Rutherford for 14, reducing West Indies to 103/3.
Late Assault Powers Windies Forward
Despite the setbacks, Rovman Powell and Jason Holder countered emphatically in the closing overs. They targeted Arshdeep Singh in the 16th over, extracting 24 runs, and capitalised on lapses in India’s fielding.
Holder attacked both pace and spin with authority, while Powell injected urgency with a punchy 34 off 19 balls. Holder remained unbeaten on 37 from 22 deliveries, ensuring a powerful finish.
The Caribbean side collected 70 runs in the final five overs, transforming a competitive total into a daunting challenge, with Holder’s towering strike off Bumrah in the last over underlining their dominance.
