The historic Eden Gardens will provide the backdrop for a decisive encounter on Sunday, with reigning champions India taking on the West Indies in their final Super 8 assignment of the T20 World Cup 2026.
As both sides sit on two points in Group 1 after one win and one defeat each, the match effectively functions as a knockout.
The qualification scenario leaves no room for ambiguity — the victorious team will move into the semi-finals alongside South Africa, who have already sealed their berth.
India approach this fixture buoyed by a comprehensive 72-run triumph over Zimbabwe at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
That emphatic display followed an earlier setback against South Africa, leaving their campaign finely balanced.
Attention will centre on spinner Varun Chakravarthy, whose performances in the Super 8 stage have lacked their usual sharpness. He proved costly in both outings and managed just a single wicket in each contest.
Back at the venue he calls home during the IPL with Kolkata Knight Riders, he will be eager to rediscover his cutting edge.
Encouragingly for the hosts, opener Abhishek Sharma returned to form with a fluent half-century against Zimbabwe, responding strongly after a string of low scores earlier in the tournament.
Windies Draw on History
India’s previous T20 World Cup outing at Eden Gardens dates back to 2016, when they overcame Pakistan.
They also enjoyed a clean sweep over the West Indies here in a bilateral T20I series in 2022.
The Caribbean side, however, holds cherished memories of this iconic venue, having clinched the 2016 world title on this very ground.
Under the leadership of Shai Hope, they will attempt to preserve their unbeaten World Cup record at Eden despite entering the contest on the back of a heavy loss to South Africa.
With progression at stake, both teams prepare to deliver an absorbing contest in Kolkata.
