Switzerland progressed to the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after registering a composed 2-0 win over Algeria at BC Place in Vancouver.
Breel Embolo opened the scoring before Dan Ndoye added a second-half goal to complete a commanding team performance.
The victory extended Switzerland’s unbeaten momentum in the tournament and marked their third successive World Cup win following victories over Bosnia and Herzegovina and Canada.
Switzerland made an enterprising start and moved ahead after just 10 minutes. Johan Manzambi burst into the penalty area before pulling the ball back for Breel Embolo, who converted from close range to give the Swiss an early advantage.
Algeria responded with some encouraging spells before half-time, but Switzerland remained organised at the back and prevented their opponents from creating clear-cut chances.
Ndoye Strengthens Switzerland’s Grip
The Swiss doubled their lead almost immediately after the restart. Following an incomplete clearance from Denis Zakaria’s cross, Dan Ndoye collected the loose ball just outside the box and calmly slotted his effort into the net to score his first goal of the competition.
The strike echoed Switzerland’s previous match against Canada at the same venue, when they had also found the net moments after the second half began. This time, however, the goal virtually ended Algeria’s hopes of a comeback.
Switzerland comfortably managed the remainder of the contest by restricting Algeria to limited attacking opportunities. Their disciplined defensive performance ensured they protected their two-goal advantage without major difficulty.
The result also secured Switzerland a place in the World Cup Round of 16 for the fourth consecutive edition of the tournament.
The Swiss will stay in Vancouver for their next match on 7 July, where they will take on either Colombia or Ghana as they look to continue their impressive run in the competition.
