Shubman Gill resumes training ahead of fifth Test

Shubman Gill has commenced his training for the fifth Test match against England at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali. Gill, who has regained his form in the ongoing Test series, curtailed his break and resumed training to prepare for the final Test. As the Indian team is yet to assemble for the Dharamsala Test, Gill utilized his time to train at his domestic cricket home ground, the PCA Stadium.

A video capturing the 24-year-old batsman engaging in a running drill at the PCA Stadium has garnered significant attention on social media, with fans praising his dedication to the game.

Recently, Shubman’s efforts were recognized as he was promoted to Grade A in the BCCI’s central contracted players’ list. His resurgence in red-ball cricket has been remarkable, currently ranking as the second-highest run-scorer in the ongoing series with 342 runs in four matches. Gill’s impactful performances in the second innings played a crucial role in India’s victory in the last three Tests.

Initially under scrutiny for inconsistency in red-ball cricket after taking the number 3 spot, Gill faced pressure in the series’ first three innings. However, with backing from the team management during challenging times, he regained his rhythm and contributed significantly to India’s success.

In the fourth Test, Gill showcased his maturity by anchoring the final innings, scoring an unbeaten 52 runs. His solid defense against the English spinners, who exploited the surface cracks, was commendable. Gill’s partnership with Dhruv Jurel, which resulted in an unbeaten 72-run stand, proved pivotal in India’s triumph.

Following the Ranchi match, Gill expressed gratitude towards skipper Rohit Sharma for instilling confidence in the young players in the absence of senior batters.

“We are immensely grateful to Rohit Bhai for his support. Despite the lack of batting experience and the loss of KL Rahul after the first Test, Rohit Bhai backed us and encouraged us to play freely,” Gill conveyed to broadcasters.

Reflecting on his partnership with Jurel, Gill emphasized the importance of adapting to the situation and playing accordingly.

“We faced pressure from the English bowlers, but Jurel’s arrival eased the situation. We assessed the circumstances and adjusted our game accordingly. The English bowlers were disciplined, preventing boundaries and maintaining pressure, but we focused on rotating the strike,” he added.
