India T20I captain Shreyas Iyer is approaching his first Asian Games campaign as an opportunity for the squad to adjust to new surroundings and strengthen its understanding as a unit.
The Indian side will travel to Japan on Sunday morning before playing a standalone T20I against the hosts ahead of the Asian Games competition in Aichi-Nagoya.
Iyer said the team must quickly assess the conditions and understand how the pitches behave before the tournament begins.
“So, having a set of ideas about how the wickets are over there, it’s going to be a combination of everything and the most important aspect is that, again, we gel along as a team, and this series is definitely a great momentum towards the Asian Games,” Iyer said.
India enter the tournament after completing a 3-0 T20I series victory against Afghanistan.
Iyer acknowledged Afghanistan’s aggressive approach while highlighting the determination and consistency shown by the Indian squad.
He said India’s players maintained an attacking mindset throughout the series and established the rhythm they wanted before heading into the Asian Games.
Iyer Praises Abhishek’s Explosive Batting
Iyer singled out opener Abhishek Sharma after the batter produced a series of commanding performances.
Abhishek struck a 30-ball century in the final T20I, helping India complete the series sweep with another dominant display.
Iyer also credited the squad’s positive dressing-room environment for maintaining high standards from match to match.
He said the contribution of players outside the playing XI remains equally important because their energy and support influence performances on the field.
