Scotland Thrash Italy By 73 Runs In T20 World Cup Group C Opener

Scotland opened their account in Group C of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup with an emphatic 73-run victory over debutants Italy at the Eden Gardens on Monday. The result highlighted Scotland’s growing confidence on the global stage and earned them crucial early points.

After Italy chose to bowl, Scotland delivered a dominant batting performance, piling up 207/4 in their allotted 20 overs.

The imposing total set Italy a stiff target of 208 and created history, becoming both the first 200-plus score of the tournament and the first such feat by an associate nation in T20 World Cup history.

George Munsey and Michael Jones provided Scotland with a strong opening stand, adding 126 runs for the first wicket.

Munsey anchored the innings with a commanding 84 off 54 balls, peppering the boundary with 13 fours and two sixes, while Jones contributed a composed 37 from 30 deliveries. Although the powerplay yielded a modest 49 runs, Scotland steadily built momentum.

Following the openers’ departure, Brandon McMullen and skipper Richie Berrington maintained the scoring rate.

McMullen struck a fluent 41, while Berrington guided the innings. Michael Leask then provided a late surge, blasting an unbeaten 22 to lift Scotland past the 200-run mark.

Ali Hasan stood out for Italy with the ball, finishing with figures of 1 for 21, including a tight 19th over that briefly checked Scotland’s charge.

Italy’s reply faltered from the outset as Justin Mosca departed without scoring. Anthony Mosca managed 13, while JJ Smuts provided a quick burst with 22 off 11 balls, but neither batter could build a lasting partnership as wickets continued to fall.

The Manenti brothers offered Italy some resistance in the middle overs.

Harry Manenti fought hard with 37 off 25 deliveries, and Ben Manenti led the scoring with a well-compiled 52 from 31 balls, striking five boundaries and a six. Despite their efforts, the escalating required rate and lack of support proved costly.

Italy’s innings unravelled once the Manenti brothers were dismissed. Michael Leask led Scotland’s bowling attack with an impressive spell of 4 for 17, dismantling the middle order.

Mark Watt added two wickets, while Brad Currie, Brad Wheal and Oliver Davidson applied sustained pressure.

Already reduced to nine effective batters after their captain suffered a shoulder dislocation earlier in the match, Italy were bowled out for 134 in 16.4 overs, sealing a dominant win for Scotland.
