Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced Roston Chase as the new Test captain of the West Indies men’s team, ahead of the home series against Australia in June.
This series will kick off the 2025–27 cycle of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) for both teams.
The appointment, which was confirmed during a meeting of the CWI Board of Directors on 16 May, also sees left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican selected as vice-captain.
In a statement, CWI said the selection followed ‘a groundbreaking, robust and structured process’ aimed at modernising leadership appointments.
The board emphasised that it used a multi-dimensional, data-informed framework to evaluate the shortlisted candidates, an approach designed to promote transparency, accountability, and alignment with global cricket standards.
Chase, aged 33, succeeds Kraigg Brathwaite, who stepped down from captaincy in March.
Though Chase has not featured in a Test since 2022, his experience and all-rounder capabilities make him a strong contender.
Player Profile
Roston Chase has played 49 Tests, scoring 2,265 runs at 26.33, including five centuries.
He has taken 85 Test wickets, with best figures of 8/60 against England in 2019.
Captaincy contenders included John Campbell, Tevin Imlach, Joshua Da Silva, Justin Greaves, Jomel Warrican, and Chase.
Notably, ODI and T20I captain Shai Hope opted out of consideration, choosing to focus on his current leadership responsibilities.
West Indies head coach Daren Sammy voiced his strong support for Chase’s elevation.
“I fully endorse this appointment. Our new captain has earned the respect of his peers, understands the responsibility that comes with the role, and has shown the leadership qualities we need to take this team forward,” said Sammy.
He urged Caribbean fans to support the team’s new leadership as they begin a new journey in Test cricket.
With a challenging series against Australia on the horizon and a new WTC cycle beginning,
Chase and his leadership team face high expectations.
Cricket West Indies will closely watch how they unify and uplift the Test squad as the team aims to revive its red-ball fortunes.
