Rohit Sharma Defies Public Image, Smashes Yorkers For Sixes Despite Umpire’s Caution

Anil Chaudhury also noted that umpiring against a player like Rohit, who is less fidgety and more composed at the crease, is less confusing.

India captain Rohit Sharma is often perceived as a calm and composed individual, both on and off the field. His relaxed demeanor has even led some, including cricket legend Ricky Ponting, to describe him as “laidback.” Another common belief about Rohit is that he tends to forget things, a notion popularized by former India captain Virat Kohli. However, Indian umpire Anil Chaudhury challenged the ‘lazy, casual’ stereotype surrounding Rohit during a recent YouTube podcast, ‘Unplugged.’

In his discussion with host Shubhankar Mishra, Chaudhury, who has officiated in over 50 international matches, advised against forming a negative impression of Rohit based on social media theories. He described Rohit as a “smart cricketer” with a high “cricketing IQ,” who makes batting appear effortless.

“Rohit may seem casual, but he’s a very smart player. Don’t be misled by his demeanor; his understanding of the game is exceptional,” Chaudhury said. He further explained, “You might not realize his sharp mind from his batting. When he’s at the crease, it feels like the bowlers are delivering at 120 kmph, but for others, it seems like 160 kmph. He often gets involved in appeals and then dismisses them casually. Despite appearances, he is far from casual.”
