Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Devajit Saikia, expressed deep condolences to India batter Rinku Singh following the passing of his father, Khanchand Singh, after a prolonged battle with liver cancer.
Devajit Saikia confirmed that Rinku Singh left Chennai at 5:00 AM for New Delhi and is heading to his hometown, Aligarh, to attend his father’s last rites.
“I express my deepest condolences on behalf of the Board of Control for Cricket in India to Rinku Singh and his family at this hour of crisis. He left for Delhi from Chennai at 5 AM to rush to the hospital in Greater Noida, where his father was undergoing treatment,” Saikia told IANS.
Saikia added that Rinku will not travel with the Indian team to Kolkata for their upcoming Super Eights fixture.
“He will not be travelling with the Indian team to Kolkata on the flight scheduled this afternoon. We will share updates as and when available,” he said.
Doctors admitted Khanchand Singh to Yatharth Hospital on February 21 after his condition deteriorated sharply and placed him on ventilator support before he passed away in the early hours of Friday.
Rinku Singh rejoined the Indian squad ahead of the Zimbabwe match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium but did not feature in the playing eleven, with Sanju Samson opening alongside Abhishek Sharma.
Defending champions India will take on the West Indies in a virtual Super Eights knockout on Sunday for a semi-final spot against South Africa.
Rinku’s absence adds an emotional note to the crucial fixture.
