Ricky Ponting's Captaincy Verdict
Australian cricket legend Ricky Ponting has expressed his belief that Rohit Sharma’s “laid-back” demeanor makes him the ideal captain to lead India to their third ODI World Cup title, particularly in front of their home crowd. India has started their World Cup campaign with three convincing wins, beating Australia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
Rohit Sharma took over the captaincy from Virat Kohli in both white-ball formats in December 2021. Ponting suggests that Rohit’s calm and composed character suits the role well, allowing Kohli to concentrate on his batting.
According to Ponting, Rohit’s personality and style of play make him well-suited to handling the pressure of leading the Indian cricket team. He notes that Rohit’s ability to stay composed, even in high-pressure situations, will be an asset in a tournament of such magnitude.
Ponting acknowledges that there will be pressure on the Indian team, given the expectations of their home fans, but he believes that Rohit Sharma is the best person to manage this pressure.
Ponting also emphasizes that India is the team to beat in the current World Cup, as they possess a talented squad with strength in fast bowling, spin, and top-order and middle-order batting. However, he acknowledges that the true test will be how they perform under extreme pressure in the tournament.
India’s next match will be against Bangladesh in Pune.
