Ravi Shastri Expresses Pride to Mohammed Shami
Former India captain and ex-head coach Ravi Shastri penned a heartfelt note to pace sensation Mohammed Shami, extending his congratulations after the cricketer was honoured with the prestigious Arjuna Award on Tuesday. Shami was among the 26 Indian athletes who were bestowed with the Arjuna Award at a ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
Acknowledging Shami’s stellar performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he emerged as the highest wicket-taker with 24 scalps in just 7 matches, Shastri commended the fast bowler’s relentless pursuit of excellence, especially during challenging times. Shami’s remarkable achievement made him the 58th Indian cricketer to receive the Arjuna Award and the first since Shikhar Dhawan in 2021.
Taking to social media, Shastri expressed his admiration for Shami’s determination to overcome tough phases and elevate his professional career to greater heights. Shastri, who was the head coach when Shami made significant strides, highlighted the pacer’s exceptional contributions in Test cricket during his tenure. Shami’s standout years in Tests, particularly in 2018 and 2019, showcased his prowess as a formidable fast bowler.

While Shami missed the recent Test series in South Africa due to an ankle injury sustained post the World Cup, he remains committed to returning to action only when fully fit. With the upcoming 5-Test series against England scheduled from January 25, the team management hopes for Shami’s complete recovery to strengthen the pace attack.
