Former World No. 1 Rafael Nadal has officially withdrawn from next week’s Laver Cup in Berlin, citing his inability to fully contribute to Team Europe’s success.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion, who was likely to participate in the seventh edition of the tournament from 20-22 September, shared his disappointment in a message released by the event.
Nadal stated, “I’m really disappointed to share that I won’t be able to compete at the Laver Cup in Berlin next week.”
He emphasized that he made his decision in the team’s best interest, explaining, “This is a team competition and to really support Team Europe, I need to do what’s best for them and at this moment there are other players who can help the team deliver the win.”
Nadal expressed his deep connection to the tournament, recalling the emotional memories he has from previous editions.
“I have so many great, emotional memories from playing Laver Cup and I was really looking forward to being with my teammates and with Bjorn in his final year as Captain. I wish Team Europe the very best of luck and will be cheering them on from afar,” he further added.
Meanwhile, the Spaniard was likely to join Team Europe for his fourth Laver Cup appearance, after competing in Prague (2017), Geneva (2019), and London (2022).
His doubles match alongside close friend and rival Roger Federer last year marked Federer’s final professional appearance.
Despite earlier confirming the Laver Cup as his next event following the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he lost in the second round to Novak Djokovic, Nadal has now withdrawn, leaving fans wondering about the future of his career.
The tennis legend has hinted that 2024 could be his final year on tour, fueling speculation about his eventual retirement.
Nadal Out Of Berlin, Supports Team Europe From Sidelines
Nadal, who has struggled with injuries throughout the season, currently holds a 12-7 match record for 2024.
His absence from Berlin will be a significant loss for Team Europe, but the tennis icon remains optimistic as he supports his teammates from the sidelines.
