Punjab Kings won the toss and chose to field against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 17th fixture of IPL 2026 at the PCA New International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh. The side has persisted with the same playing XI, continuing their established approach.
Under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, the Punjab Kings have begun their campaign strongly, remaining unbeaten in their first three matches. They recorded close wins over the Gujarat Titans and the Chennai Super Kings, while their previous match against the Kolkata Knight Riders was called off due to rain. The team will aim to extend this positive run.
Sunrisers Hyderabad have delivered mixed performances so far. They opened their campaign with a loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Sunrisers Hyderabad responded with a dominant win over the Kolkata Knight Riders. They then suffered a defeat against Lucknow Super Giants in their last outing.
Following the toss, Shreyas Iyer explained that bowling first would help assess the pitch conditions better in a day match. He stressed the importance of trusting young players. Iyer added that they should play naturally and confirmed that the team combination remains unchanged.
Speaking after losing the toss, Ishan Kishan said his side would have preferred to bowl first as well. He observed that the surface looked firm and underlined the need for disciplined execution in T20 cricket.
Sunrisers Hyderabad made alterations to their squad for this match. Salil Arora returned to the playing XI, while Praful Hinge made his debut.
Sunrisers Hyderabad excluded Liam Livingstone and Jaydev Unadkat, indicating a shift in team strategy.
