Chennai Super Kings faced their second consecutive defeat in the IPL 2024 season as SunRisers Hyderabad secured a comfortable victory with six wickets to spare. Ruturaj Gaikwad, the new captain of CSK, finds himself under increasing pressure after a promising start with two wins. Australian cricket legend Matthew Hayden, speaking on Star Sports, critiqued Gaikwad’s captaincy, particularly focusing on a couple of decisions that he deemed less than optimal.
Hayden commented on the utilization of Moeen Ali, suggesting that the all-rounder should have been promoted up the batting order to inject hope and courage into the team’s performance during the power play. He believed Ali’s aggressive approach could have made a significant impact, especially considering CSK’s slow start at 1 for 49 in the power play. Hayden also analyzed the bowling decisions, suggesting that spinner Maheesh Theekshana should have been brought on earlier to exploit a favorable match-up against Travis Head.

Furthermore, Hayden hinted at the immense pressure that comes with leading a team like CSK, especially with the towering legacy of MS Dhoni, affectionately known as Thala, looming over. He emphasized the need for Gaikwad to make quicker and sharper decisions under such circumstances.
Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan echoed Hayden’s sentiments, particularly regarding the batting order. Pathan believed that Dhoni should have been pushed up the order to capitalize on favorable match-ups against specific bowlers like Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jaydev Unadkat. He also noted the advantage of having a right-hander like Dhoni against certain bowling angles, which could have eased the pressure on left-handed batsmen like Ravindra Jadeja, who struggled to get going.
Overall, both Hayden and Pathan highlighted areas where Gaikwad’s captaincy could be improved, urging for more strategic and proactive decision-making to turn CSK’s fortunes around in the IPL 2024 season.
