India’s women’s cricket team secured the country’s first gold medal of the ongoing Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games after defeating Sri Lanka in the women’s T20 final.
The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side successfully defended the title it won at the previous Asian Games, again overcoming Sri Lanka in the gold-medal match.
India produced a record-breaking batting display by posting 216/3, with Smriti Mandhana scoring 79 and Richa Ghosh making an unbeaten 49 from 22 balls. Sri Lanka were then bowled out for 69 as India completed a 147-run victory.
President Droupadi Murmu congratulated the entire squad and highlighted the team’s influence on young athletes, particularly girls.
“My heartiest congratulations to all the members of Team India on winning Women’s T20 Asia Cup Championship 2026. They played superbly as a team throughout the tournament, winning all the matches. They have done the country proud and are a source of great inspiration for our youth, especially our daughters. I am sure, they will script many more inspiring chapters of success and excellence,” the President’s official handle posted on X.

PM Modi Hails Women’s Team
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised the cricketers for delivering India’s first gold of the Games and described their performance as a source of inspiration for young cricketers.

He also congratulated Suchika Tariyal after she secured India’s first-ever Asian Games medal in mixed martial arts with bronze in the women’s traditional -60kg category.

Tariyal earned her medal by defeating Mongolia’s Altanchimeg Baigalmaa 2-0 in the quarterfinals before losing her semi-final bout.
