Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually inaugurate the 72nd National Volleyball Tournament on January 4 at noon, placing Indian sport, youth aspiration, and regional development firmly in the national spotlight.
The opening ceremony at Dr Sampoornanand Sports Stadium will turn Varanasi into the focal point of India’s volleyball calendar, blending sporting excellence with political symbolism.
The tournament, scheduled from January 4 to January 11, will assemble the country’s finest volleyball talent under one roof.
More than 1,000 players will compete fiercely, representing 73 men’s and women’s teams from states and institutional units across India.
Organisers expect intense matches, disciplined competition, and a showcase of athletic skill that reflects the sport’s expanding national footprint.
By awarding the tournament to Varanasi, authorities have underscored a deliberate push to strengthen sports infrastructure beyond traditional metropolitan centres.
The event marks the first time Purvanchal hosts a national-level volleyball championship of this magnitude.
Local leaders view this milestone as a decisive step in reshaping Kashi’s image, from a historic spiritual capital to a modern hub capable of staging major sporting and cultural events.

The championship also aligns closely with the Centre’s ‘Khelo India’ vision, which aims to nurture grassroots talent and transform sport into a vehicle for youth empowerment.
PM Modi’s virtual address is expected to reinforce that narrative, highlighting discipline, teamwork, and national pride as essential pillars of India’s sporting future.
While the Prime Minister will connect digitally, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will attend the inauguration in person.
He is expected to interact with players, encourage teams, and signal the state government’s commitment to sports-led development. His presence adds political weight to an event already carrying national attention.
In the run-up to the tournament, organising committee chairman and Varanasi Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari, accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Volleyball Association president Brijesh Pathak, met the Prime Minister in New Delhi to extend a formal invitation.
During the interaction, PM Modi conveyed his best wishes and described the championship as a powerful platform to inspire India’s youth.
Organisers have infused the tournament with local cultural identity by unveiling two mascots: ‘Nandu’, inspired by Nandi, and ‘Neera’, based on the Ganga river dolphin.
Officials have also announced random anti-doping tests to ensure transparency and competitive integrity.
Beyond medals and rankings, stakeholders believe the championship will leave a lasting legacy, strengthening sports culture and infrastructure across eastern Uttar Pradesh while amplifying Varanasi’s growing national stature.
