Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the Indian men’s and women’s chess teams for their groundbreaking gold medal victories at the Chess Olympiad in Budapest. He met the players at his residence in New Delhi on Wednesday, congratulating them on their remarkable achievement.
Historic Victory in the Open Event
The Indian men’s team made history by winning the gold medal in the open event during the 45th Chess Olympiad. The team secured their position after a stunning victory against the US on September 21. To clinch the gold, India needed to avoid defeat against Slovenia in the final round. Players D Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, and R Praggnanadhaa excelled, winning their matches in the 11th and final round. Vidit Gujarati contributed by drawing his match, ensuring the team’s success.
Women’s Team Secures Gold
In the women’s event, the Indian team triumphed over Azerbaijan with a decisive 3.5-0.5 victory. They awaited the result of the Kazakhstan vs. USA match, which ended in a draw, confirming a double gold medal for India. This historic achievement marks a significant milestone in the country’s chess history.
