Cricket fans witnessed mixed results for two Indian stalwarts as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma took the field in separate Vijay Hazare Trophy fixtures on Friday.
Opening the innings for Mumbai, Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a golden duck in the Elite Group C match against Uttarakhand in Jaipur.
Facing the final ball of the first over, right-arm medium pacer Akash Madhwal Bora had the former India captain caught at deep fine leg, with Jagmohan Nagarkoti recovering after an initial fumble to complete the catch.
Coming into the match with strong momentum, the 38-year-old had recently marked his return to domestic cricket in style.
Earlier in the week, Rohit scored a rapid 62-ball century against Sikkim, his first Vijay Hazare Trophy appearance in seven years. He later followed it up with a blistering 155 off 98 deliveries in a successful chase.
That knock also represented Rohit’s 37th List A century, adding to his tally of 33 international hundreds for India.
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli continued his positive run for Delhi with a polished 77 against Gujarat in the Elite Group D clash held in Bengaluru. Displaying trademark control and timing, the right-hander struck 14 boundaries during his stay at the crease.
Key Partnerships Anchor Delhi Innings
Building crucial partnerships, Kohli added 72 runs for the second wicket with Arpit Rana and later contributed brief stands with Nitish Rana and Rishabh Pant. Eventually, Vishal Jayswal dismissed him in the 22nd over.
Earlier in the tournament, Kohli reached a significant landmark during Delhi’s match against Andhra Pradesh at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence.
Scoring his first run of the chase, he became only the second Indian batter after Sachin Tendulkar to complete 16,000 runs in List A cricket.
With 57 centuries in the format, Kohli remains within touching distance of Tendulkar’s long-standing record of 60 List A hundreds.
Notably, Kohli last appeared in the Vijay Hazare Trophy during the 2010–11 season, when he captained Delhi.
Although he featured in the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy in 2013–14, he had not played in the Vijay Hazare for nearly a decade before making this comeback.
Overall, the performances of Kohli and Rohit have added renewed excitement to the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, underlining the continued relevance of senior stars in India’s domestic circuit.
