Mirabai Chanu achieved another landmark in her illustrious career by capturing her third successive Commonwealth Games gold medal in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event at Glasgow 2026.
The victory also earned India its opening gold medal of the competition and made her the first Indian to accomplish the remarkable feat.
Following her triumph, Mirabai expressed heartfelt gratitude to her family, saying their constant encouragement helped her overcome injuries and difficult moments throughout her career. She also acknowledged long-time coach Vijay Sharma, praising his guidance, planning and support in preparing for every major championship.
The Olympic silver medallist revealed that her team had initially planned a cautious approach before an unsuccessful opening snatch attempt forced a change in strategy. She responded with determination by clearing 82kg before producing an outstanding 85kg lift that established new Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth snatch records.
Mirabai carried the momentum into the clean and jerk competition. Although she missed her opening lift, she recovered confidently by lifting 105kg on her second attempt, comfortably sealing the gold medal.
Reflecting on the medal ceremony, Mirabai described hearing the Indian National Anthem as the most emotional moment of the day. She said the anthem always fills her with pride and joy, and winning India’s first gold medal in Glasgow made the occasion even more memorable.
The latest success adds another golden chapter to Mirabai’s career after her victories at Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022, further strengthening her status as one of India’s most accomplished weightlifters.
