In the 24th match of IPL 2026, the Mumbai Indians faced the Punjab Kings on Thursday at the Wankhede Stadium. Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and opted to bowl first, citing favourable pitch conditions.
After the toss, Iyer expressed confidence in his side’s current combination, stating that the team would continue with the same playing XI. He emphasised the importance of staying grounded and focused, adding that the pitch appeared slightly dry.
The Mumbai Indians made two notable changes to their line-up. Rohit Sharma and Mitchell Santner were ruled out of the match. Quinton de Kock replaced Rohit at the top, while Mayank Rawat was handed his IPL debut in place of Santner.
Captain Hardik Pandya admitted that his side would also have preferred to bowl first.
Reflecting on their previous outing, Pandya noted that conceding over 20 runs in multiple overs proved costly. He stressed that the team is aware of areas requiring improvement.
Under Shreyas Iyer’s leadership, Punjab Kings have enjoyed an impressive start to IPL 2026, securing three wins in four matches, with one game ending without a result. Their opening duo of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh has consistently provided solid starts.
Cooper Connolly and Iyer have contributed significantly with the bat. However, Arshdeep Singh has struggled to find rhythm, while Marco Jansen was expensive in a recent outing against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Mumbai Indians, in contrast, have faced a challenging run. After winning their opening match, they have suffered three consecutive defeats. Their latest loss came against Royal Challengers Bengaluru by 18 runs.
The batting unit has yet to click consistently, with Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav unable to convert promising starts.
Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya have also lacked impact. Sherfane Rutherford’s explosive 71 off 31 balls in the previous match was, however, a bright spot. The bowling attack, too, has struggled for consistency.
