Kolkata witnessed heightened security measures on Sunday after chaos erupted during a Lionel Messi-related event at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan, exposing glaring lapses in event management and crowd control. Police deployed additional forces outside the residence of event organiser Satadru Dutta in Rishra, Hooghly district, amid fears of protests by angry fans demanding ticket refunds.
Authorities arrested Dutta at the Kolkata airport late Saturday, holding him responsible for organising the high-profile event that promised fans a glimpse of the global football icon. Police officials moved swiftly to prevent unrest, setting up a permanent picket outside his house and increasing deployment at the Rishra police station to deter any spillover of public anger into the locality.
The unrest began at the Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday evening when thousands of spectators, many of whom had paid steep ticket prices, failed to see Messi as expected. Fans accused organisers of gross mismanagement, alleging that VIP barricades obstructed visibility and that crowd arrangements collapsed under pressure. As frustration mounted, sections of the crowd resorted to vandalism, damaging property and forcing police to intervene.
Law enforcement agencies worked through the night to restore order. Senior officials from the Chandannagar Police Commissionerate confirmed that they enhanced security to pre-empt fresh demonstrations. Officers cited credible inputs suggesting that disgruntled fans could gather outside the organiser’s residence, prompting precautionary deployment of personnel and vehicles.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took note of the incident and announced the formation of a high-level inquiry committee to investigate the failures that led to the violence. The government signalled zero tolerance for negligence in organising mass events, especially those involving international figures and large public gatherings.
Crowd Fury Exposes Mismanagement
Residents of Bangur Park in Rishra described a tense atmosphere since Saturday afternoon. Locals observed police vans arriving at regular intervals, while the organiser’s house remained shut amid growing scrutiny. Officials maintained that the heightened presence aimed solely at maintaining peace and public safety.
The episode has sparked a broader debate on accountability in large-scale sporting and entertainment events in India. Sports administrators and political observers argue that poor planning, unchecked VIP culture, and a lack of transparent communication with ticket holders often ignite public anger.
As investigations progress, police continue to monitor sensitive locations across Kolkata and adjoining districts. Authorities aim to prevent further unrest while ensuring that those responsible for the chaos face legal consequences.
