Marizanne Kapp Stars As South Africa Defeat India In Women’s T20 World Cup

South Africa secured a commanding six-wicket triumph over India after veteran all-rounder Marizanne Kapp produced a remarkable unbeaten innings of 81 from 45 deliveries.

Pursuing a target of 159, the Proteas overcame early difficulties to reach 161/4 with five balls remaining and claim a crucial Group A victory.

After being put into bat, India finished on 158/7 from their allotted 20 overs.

Shafali Verma led the scoring with 31, while Deepti Sharma added 29 valuable runs.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur, featuring in her 200th T20 International, contributed 24.

The South African bowling unit maintained pressure throughout the innings and prevented India from establishing any substantial partnerships.

Kapp and Shabnim Ismail were particularly effective, taking two wickets apiece.

India made a promising start with the ball as left-arm spinner N Sree Charani delivered a superb spell. She removed Laura Wolvaardt and Annerie Dercksen in a double-wicket maiden, reducing South Africa to 25/2 and putting the chasing side under pressure.

Despite the setbacks, Kapp joined forces with Tazmin Brits to rebuild the innings. Their 97-run partnership shifted the momentum firmly in South Africa’s favour, with Brits making a composed 40 before departing.

Kapp gradually took control of the contest and punished India for two missed opportunities in the field.

Displaying a wide range of attacking strokes, she struck seven fours and four sixes while anchoring the chase.

Although Charani finished with excellent figures of 3/24, India was unable to halt South Africa’s progress.

Chloe Tryon eventually guided the winning runs, sealing a memorable victory and handing India their first loss of the tournament.
