Global football icon Lionel Messi visited Gujarat’s Jamnagar to explore the Vantara Wildlife Sanctuary, a world-class conservation centre established by Anant Ambani.
Messi arrived alongside his Inter Miami teammates, Luis Suárez and Rodrigo De Paul and received a lavish traditional welcome that combined cultural reverence with festive grandeur.
The sanctuary greeted Messi with local music, showers of flowers, and a ceremonial aarti.
Messi actively participated in the rituals, including prayers to Ambaji Mata, Ganesh, Hanuman, and performed the Shiv Abhishek. He also prayed for global peace, underscoring the spiritual significance of his visit.
At Vantara, Messi engaged closely with wildlife. He observed large cats, elephants, herbivorous animals, and reptiles interacting with the sanctuary team to understand animal care and conservation protocols.
Messi personally fed okapis, rhinos, giraffes, and elephants, demonstrating hands-on commitment to wildlife engagement.
Lion Cub Named in Messi’s Honour
In a touching moment, Anant and Radhika Ambani named a lion cub ‘Lionel’ in the footballer’s honour, highlighting the symbolic connection between celebrity influence and wildlife awareness.
Messi also praised India’s Prime Minister for his dedication to wildlife protection, acknowledging national leadership in conservation efforts.
The most memorable moment of Messi’s visit came at the elephant conservation centre. Here, he met a rescued elephant calf named Maniklal, saved alongside his ailing mother, Pratima, from the timber industry.
Spontaneously, Messi began a playful football session with the young elephant. Maniklal enthusiastically joined in, creating a heartwarming and unforgettable spectacle that charmed everyone present.
Messi’s interaction highlighted the powerful bond between humans and animals and reinforced the importance of sanctuary-based conservation.
Messi repeatedly praised Vantara’s operations, remarking in Spanish that the sanctuary’s work is exemplary. He admired the meticulous care, rescue operations, and rehabilitation practices, stating he thoroughly enjoyed his time and looked forward to returning.
The visit concluded with customary ceremonies, including coconut offerings and matka breaking, symbolising blessings and good fortune.
Anant Ambani personally welcomed Messi throughout the visit, explaining the sanctuary’s initiatives and conservation strategies.
The event showcased India’s commitment to wildlife preservation, celebrity-driven awareness, and Anant Ambani’s hands-on leadership in promoting sustainable environmental practices.
The combination of high-profile sportsmanship and dedicated conservation sent a clear message: wildlife protection and community engagement can coexist harmoniously, inspiring global attention and local action.
Messi’s visit to Vantara Wildlife Sanctuary not only highlighted the sanctuary’s achievements but also reinforced India’s growing role in global wildlife conservation, blending culture, sports, and environmental responsibility into one unforgettable experience.
