Virat Kohli has stressed that personal milestones cannot sustain a long career in international cricket, saying he has consistently aimed to help India win from challenging positions.
The Indian batter remained unbeaten on 139 in the opening ODI against West Indies at Greenfield International Stadium.
The knock took him past 15,000 runs in men’s ODIs, a feat previously achieved only by Sachin Tendulkar. Kohli also notched his 55th century in the format, reaching the landmark in the third-fastest time.
In a video the BCCI posted on Monday, Kohli said his priority had always been to take the team to victory in varied match situations.
He added that players who focus on statistics risk losing sight of the team’s central purpose.
Kohli discussed his close understanding with captain Shubman Gill, who made 110 in the match.
He said leaders and senior team members can help others handle pressure by keeping the dressing-room atmosphere light while maintaining professionalism during play.
He described their batting partnership as comfortable because each knows how to approach the game.
The pair often chat about matters beyond the match while at the crease, Kohli said, and share tactical thoughts when they field.
Gill said he felt delighted to stand at the non-striker’s end when Kohli reached 15,000 ODI runs.
Having admired Kohli since childhood, Gill described sharing the crease with his idol as a meaningful part of his own cricketing journey.
He added that Kohli’s confidence and enjoyment of batting are evident both on and off the field, and that their easy-going rapport carries into their performances.
