Yashasvi Jaiswal struck a gritty 118 as India stretched their lead over England to 281 runs by tea on day three of the fifth Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test at The Oval on Saturday. India reached 304/6 in 71 overs.
Jaiswal’s sixth Test century, and his fourth against England, came off 164 balls. It included 14 fours and two sixes.
The left-handed opener, who had started the tour with a century at Headingley, impressed once again—this time with his parents and elder brother watching from the stands.
India added 115 runs in the afternoon session, but England took three wickets. Ravindra Jadeja (26*) and Dhruv Jurel (25*) were unbeaten at the break.
India will look to maximise their score before the second new ball becomes available in nine overs.
England Take Wickets; India Stand Resilient
Gus Atkinson gave England a dream start after lunch by trapping Shubman Gill lbw for 11. The ball nipped in sharply and hit him on the knee roll. Gill reviewed the decision, but there was no inside edge.
Jaiswal brought up his second century of the series with a single to the backwards point. Karun Nair, however, looked shaky and was dismissed soon after edging Atkinson behind following a dropped catch in the slips.
Jadeja and Jaiswal scored quickly until the latter was dismissed on 118. He attempted a ramp shot off Overton, only to be caught at backward point.
England believed they had Jadeja trapped lbw when Josh Tongue struck his boot, but the review overturned it. Jurel, batting with confidence, hit three crisp boundaries.
Jadeja remains key for India as they look to take their lead past 350 and set a tough target for England.
