In an electrifying encounter at Eden Gardens, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) edged past Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by two wickets in the IPL 2025, thanks to a scintillating 22-ball fifty from Dewald Brevis.
The chase of 180 appeared doomed at 60/5 before Brevis and Shivam Dube launched a counter-attack that turned the game on its head.
Early Woes For CSK
CSK’s innings began on a disastrous note. Ayush Mhatre fell for a duck, slapping Vaibhav Arora to point.
Debutant Urvil Patel offered a spark with an 11-ball 31, including three sixes, but his stay was cut short by Harshit Rana.
Moeen Ali struck back by bowling Devon Conway, while Ashwin and Jadeja fell cheaply to leave CSK reeling at 62/5 after the powerplay.
Brevis Turns The Tide
Dewald Brevis stepped up when CSK needed a spark, with the young South African seizing control to shift the momentum in his team’s favour.
He and Dube steadied the ship against a tight spell from Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy.
Then came the 11th over – Brevis went berserk against Arora, hammering three sixes and two fours to notch up his fifty in just 22 deliveries.
That over yielded 30 runs and swung the momentum firmly in CSK’s favour.
Brevis eventually departed for 52 off 25 balls, holing out to long-on off Chakaravarthy, but not before reigniting CSK’s hopes.
Dube, Dhoni Seal The Deal
Dube took over from Brevis, lofting Harshit Rana and Andre Russell for crucial boundaries.
However, Arora returned to dismiss both Dube and Noor Ahmad, adding late drama.
With eight needed off the final over, MS Dhoni stepped up under pressure, launching Russell for a six.
Anshul Kamboj then sealed the match with a lofted boundary over mid-off, clinching victory with two balls to spare.
Bowling Brilliance
Earlier, Noor Ahmad was instrumental in restricting KKR to 179/6, returning figures of 4-31.
Ajinkya Rahane (48) and Andre Russell (38) were the top scorers for the hosts, but failed to provide the late surge.
The win keeps CSK’s playoff hopes alive and dents KKR’s chances.
Brevis’s fearless knock and CSK’s ability to bounce back from collapse underline their championship pedigree.
