Chennai Super Kings pulled off an impressive chase to beat Lucknow Super Giants by five wickets in the IPL 2026 clash played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday.
The home side successfully overhauled the 204-run target with four deliveries remaining, thanks largely to a sensational innings from Urvil Patel, who smashed 65 runs from just 23 balls.
Lucknow Super Giants produced an aggressive batting display after being sent in to bat first.
Opener Josh Inglis dominated the innings with a blistering 85 off 33 balls, striking ten fours and six maximums. His attacking approach helped LSG race to 91 runs during the power play. However, CSK bowlers regained control during the later stages of the innings.
Jamie Overton emerged as Chennai’s best bowler with figures of 3/36, while Anshul Kamboj picked up two wickets. Shahbaz Ahmed also made a valuable, unbeaten contribution of 43 to guide LSG to 203/8.
Chennai started the chase confidently, with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson finding boundaries regularly.
After Samson lost his wicket, Urvil Patel transformed the match completely with fearless strokeplay.
The young batter attacked every bowler with confidence and brought up his maiden IPL fifty in only 13 deliveries, matching the record for the fastest half-century in IPL history.
Urvil smashed eight sixes and two boundaries during his remarkable innings, helping CSK post 97/1 in the powerplay — the highest powerplay total recorded at Chepauk.
Lucknow Super Giants fought back after Urvil’s dismissal as Shahbaz Ahmed and Digvesh Rathi removed important batters during the middle overs.
Kartik Sharma added a useful 20 runs before departing, leaving Chennai with work still to do in the final overs.
Prashant Veer and Shivam Dube then handled the pressure well and kept the scoreboard moving.
Chennai needed 10 runs in the final over. Shivam Dube sealed the win by smashing two consecutive sixes off Aiden Markram.
The result pushed Chennai Super Kings to fifth position in the IPL 2026 points table. Lucknow Super Giants, meanwhile, suffered another setback in their campaign for a playoff spot.
