Indian women’s cricket team captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, stands firm in her stance and holds no remorse for her emotional outburst during the third ODI against Bangladesh in Dhaka last month.
Frustration over umpiring decisions reached a boiling point for Harmanpreet during the match, leading her to express her discontent by smashing the stumps in anger upon her dismissal. Her frustration did not subside after the game; it spilled into the post-match presentation, where she vocally criticized the umpiring decisions, labeling them as “pathetic.” She also took a dig at the Bangladesh team and suggested that the umpires join the trophy presentation photo, sparking backlash from former players and pundits.
Subsequently, Harmanpreet received a two-match suspension and accumulated three demerit points—one for dissent at an umpiring decision and another for publicly criticizing the officials. The suspension ruled her out of the first two games of the Asian Games campaign for the Indian side.
Despite the repercussions, Harmanpreet stands by her actions. In her own words, she expressed her commitment to fairness in the game and defended her right to voice her feelings as a player. During the Women’s Hundred, she stated, “I will not say that I regret anything because at the end of the day as a player you want to see that fair things are happening. As a player, you always have the right to express yourself and what you’re feeling.”
Harmanpreet maintains that her words during the incident were not inappropriate, and she stands by her account of what transpired on the field. She remains resolute, asserting, “I don’t think I said anything wrong to any player or any person. I just said what happened on the field. I don’t regret anything,” underscoring her commitment to the integrity of the game.
Currently participating in the Women’s Hundred tournament, Harmanpreet represents Trent Rockets, where her skills continue to shine on the cricketing stage.
