Team India is preparing for a crucial battle as they face Australia in the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Sydney Cricket Ground on 3 January.
Trailing 1-2 in the five-match series, India is determined to bounce back in what promises to be an intense contest.
Head Coach Gautam Gambhir emphasized the team’s ‘team-first’ philosophy, urging players to adapt their game as per the team’s requirements.
Gambhir stated, “There is only one tendency and there is only one discussion – it’s the team first ideology that matters. You need to play what the team needs. You can still play your natural game in a team sport – but if the team needs you – you need to play in a certain way.”
Addressing the media, Gambhir clarified that the focus remains solely on winning the Sydney Test.
“Every individual knows in which area they need to work. When you play for your country, you want to give your best. I think the debates between a player and a coach should remain between them – conversations should be restricted to the dressing room. Everything is fine with Rohit and we will announce that (Playing 11) tomorrow, after seeing the pitch. We had just one conversation in our dressing room – how we will win the next test, as it is important for us,” said the Head Coach.
However, India faces a forced change in the lineup, with pacer Akash Deep ruled out due to a back injury.
Gambhir confirmed the 28-year-old’s unavailability, noting, “As of now, Akash Deep is out (for the fifth test) due to a back injury.”
Akash Deep has been a promising addition to the squad since his Test debut in 2024 against England, having taken 15 wickets in seven matches.
In the ongoing series, he has claimed five wickets at an average of 54.00.
Australia’s dominant 184-run victory in Melbourne not only gave them a 2-1 lead in the series but also ended India’s chances of qualifying for the World Test Championship Final at Lord’s.
With the trophy and pride at stake, the Sydney Test holds immense significance for both teams.
The match will however serve as a test of resilience for India as they aim to level the series and end the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on a high note.
