India Coach Rahul Dravid Expresses Disappointment Over Star Player’s Subpar Performance Against England

After suffering a defeat in the first Test against England, the Indian cricket team made a remarkable comeback in the second Test, clinching victory by 106 runs against the Ben Stokes-led side. Despite England showing glimpses of promise at times, the Indian bowlers showcased their prowess by dismissing England twice in the match. Standout performances from Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jasprit Bumrah, and Shubman Gill helped India level the five-match series 1-1. However, there were areas of concern, particularly with the batting performances of specialist batters Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer.

Wicketkeeper KS Bharat’s performance also came under scrutiny. Despite receiving opportunities behind the stumps due to the unavailability of Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan, Bharat’s batting failed to impress. Coach Rahul Dravid expressed satisfaction with Bharat’s keeping but acknowledged his struggles with the bat, stating that young players often take time to develop and seize opportunities.

Given Bharat’s underwhelming batting display in the ongoing series against England, there is a need for Ishan Kishan’s inclusion. However, Kishan has yet to fully recover from injuries sustained in a car accident in December 2022. Alongside Bharat, Dhruv Jurel was also part of the first two Tests.

Dravid clarified the situation regarding Kishan’s absence, emphasizing that there is a path for his return whenever he feels ready. He highlighted that Kishan had requested a break, and the team respected his decision. Dravid stressed the importance of Kishan playing cricket and returning when he feels prepared, without any pressure from the selectors or team management.

Following the series-levelling victory over England, Dravid reiterated that Kishan’s return is open-ended and dependent on his readiness to play. He emphasized that Kishan’s return does not necessitate domestic cricket participation but rather a readiness to play and contribute to the team whenever he feels prepared.
