In a landmark achievement for Indian sports, Harvinder Singh has won the gold medal in the men’s individual recurve open archery event at the Paralympic Games in Paris.
This victory makes Singh the first Indian archer to clinch gold in the Paralympics and marks a remarkable follow-up to his bronze medal performance at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
In Wednesday’s final, Singh however showcased exceptional skill and focus, decisively defeating Poland’s Lukasz Ciszek with a 6-0 scoreline.
Singh’s dominance was evident as he secured the first set 28-24 and continued to excel in the subsequent sets, maintaining a consistent high standard throughout the match.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Singh’s achievement, celebrating it as a significant moment for Indian athletics.
Taking to X, PM Modi expressed his admiration, stating, “A very special Gold in Para Archery!”
“Congratulations to Harvinder Singh for winning the Gold medal in the Men’s Individual Recurve Open at the #Paralympics2024!, he added.
PM Modi further asserted, “His precision, focus and unwavering spirit are outstanding. India is very happy with his accomplishment.”
Harvinder Singh’s journey to this historic victory is both inspiring and remarkable.
Hailing from Ajit Nagar village in Haryana’s Kaithal district, Singh faced significant challenges early in life.
At just one and a half years old, he suffered complications from dengue fever and the resulting treatment led to a loss of function in his legs.
Despite this setback, Singh found a new passion in archery after being inspired by the London Paralympics in 2012.
Singh’s triumph is a testament to his resilience and dedication, overcoming personal and physical hurdles to achieve excellence in his sport.
His success not only adds a prestigious gold medal to India’s Paralympic history but also serves as a beacon of inspiration for athletes around the world.
