The global cricket community has been left heartbroken by the sudden death of 17-year-old Australian cricketer Ben Austin.
The young cricketer who tragically lost his life following a training accident.
Austin was batting in the nets ahead of a T20 match at Ferntree Gully when a ball struck him on the neck in front of his teammates.
Paramedics with advanced life support rushed him to the hospital in critical condition on Tuesday.
Despite doctors’ best efforts, he passed away on Wednesday, a day after the incident.
Cricketers, franchises, and fans across the world paid emotional tributes to the young player.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) expressed their grief.
Tribute to the young player
The West Australian Cricket Association (WACA) confirmed that players wore black armbands in his memory during Day 3 of their Sheffield Shield match against South Australia.
At Ferntree Gully Cricket Club, teammates and supporters left flowers, bats and jerseys at the nets where Austin trained. A touching tribute to the young cricketer.
CSK shared on X, “Cricket, like life, can be heartbreakingly unpredictable. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.”
KKR wrote, “All of us at KKR are deeply saddened by the loss of young Ben Austin. Our love and prayers are with his family, friends, teammates and the Australian cricket community during this difficult time.”
WACA also paid respects, posting, “Black armbands today for Ben Austin. Thoughts with his family and friends.”
Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen called it “horrific news” and expressed his condolences, while Michael Vaughan wrote, “RIP Ben Austin gone far too young. Thoughts are with his family and close friends.”
Cricket New South Wales joined in mourning, offering “deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and Ferntree Gully Cricket Club.”
The Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Renegades also shared heartfelt tributes, saying the cricket world had lost one of its bright young stars.
Ferntree Gully Cricket Club, along with the Waverley Park Hawks Junior Football Club, has launched a GoFundMe campaign.
This initiative was made to support Ben Austin’s family during this tragic time.
