‘Men in Blue’ captain Rohit Sharma has received praise and accolades from former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir, who believes that he has performed admirably throughout the ODI World Cup 2023. Gambhir said in a podcast interview that India won the World Cup and only lost one match. “Rohit has done an outstanding job as captain. Winning five IPL trophies is a difficult feat. Given how India has dominated the previous 50-over World Cup, as well as my previous statement before to the World Cup final, I firmly believe that India performed like a champion team regardless of the outcome. Rohit Sharma and this team are not a horrible team because of one poor performance. The way they have dominated the entire tournament in just ten games. It is unfair to label Rohit Sharma a lousy captain based solely on one poor performance, stated Gambhir.
India lost to Australia in the championship game following a run of ten victories in a row.

If Rohit is in good form, the 42-year-old former player believes he should captain the Indian team in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
“If Rohit Sharma is playing well, he ought to be heading the T20 World Cup; if not, the person who is not playing well shouldn’t be selected for the T20 World Cup. A captain has responsibilities. You are appointed captain after first being chosen as a player. According to him, a captain ought to hold a spot in the starting lineup permanently, and that spot will be determined by their performance.

The 2011 ODI World Cup winner, an East Delhi-based BJP MP, stated that form should be the only factor taken into consideration while deciding which players to leave off the squad, rather than age.
“A player’s age shouldn’t determine whether they are selected or discarded; instead, form should be the determining factor. A player’s decision to retire is also entirely personal; selectors are free to decline their selection, but in the end, a player cannot be denied a bat or a ball. The most important thing is form,” he continued.
