In a heartwarming display of sportsmanship, MS Dhoni, known for his iconic finishes, chose to step back and let Ruturaj Gaikwad take the spotlight as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) secured a crucial victory against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL 2024 match at Chepauk.
Anticipation filled the air as fans eagerly awaited Dhoni’s batting prowess at his beloved venue after almost a year. However, instead of hogging the limelight, Dhoni, in typical fashion, recognized Gaikwad’s stellar performance in the run chase and allowed the young opener to score the winning run.
This gesture echoed a similar moment from a decade ago during the 2014 T20 World Cup semi-final against South Africa. Dhoni’s decision to hand the strike to Virat Kohli, his deputy at the time, instead of finishing the game himself, showcased his selflessness and team spirit.
In Monday’s match against KKR, Dhoni once again demonstrated his humility by defending the final ball of an over to give Gaikwad the chance to shine. Gaikwad, who had been the backbone of CSK’s chase with a remarkable half-century, repaid the faith by smashing the boundary needed to secure victory.

With this win, CSK claimed their third victory of the IPL 2024 season, all of which have come at Chepauk. Despite back-to-back losses in away games against Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad, CSK’s triumph at their home ground reaffirmed their dominance in the tournament.
