Cristiano Ronaldo has officially brought his FIFA World Cup career to a close after Portugal suffered a 1-0 extra-time defeat against Spain in the Round of 16 at Dallas Stadium.
The veteran forward confirmed that he will not feature in another edition of football’s biggest tournament, ending a World Cup journey that spanned two decades.
Reflecting on Portugal’s exit, Ronaldo admitted the result was painful but maintained that he had fulfilled his responsibility to the national team.
The Portuguese captain also revealed that he intends to spend time with his family before deciding on his future, rather than making any immediate decisions in the aftermath of the defeat.
The 41-year-old finishes his World Cup career with 27 appearances, placing him second on the all-time list behind Lionel Messi. He also amassed 11 goals during the tournament and became the first player in history to score in six different FIFA World Cup editions.
Ronaldo’s World Cup story began in Germany in 2006, where he helped Portugal reach the semi-finals and opened his tournament account with a goal against Iran. He subsequently represented his country in every World Cup from 2006 to 2026, scoring in each edition.
While lifting the FIFA World Cup trophy remained beyond his reach, Ronaldo enjoyed major success with Portugal by winning the UEFA European Championship in 2016 and two UEFA Nations League titles. He said those triumphs marked a new era for Portuguese football, as the national team had never won a major international trophy before.
Although his World Cup chapter has now closed, Ronaldo’s achievements, records, and longevity ensure his place among the greatest players to have graced the global stage.
