Australia has named young all-rounder Cooper Connolly as the replacement for the injured Matthew Short ahead of their semi-final clash against India in the ongoing Champions Trophy.
Short sustained a calf injury while fielding and appeared limited during his brief 20 runs at the top of Australia’s batting order, before rain led to the match against Afghanistan being abandoned.
Australia’s captain Steve Smith expressed concerns about Short’s recovery, stating, “He wasn’t moving very well, and I think it’s probably going to be too quick between games for him to recover.”
Connolly’s Role & Experience
Connolly, who has played in six international matches, including three ODIs, will bring valuable versatility to the squad.
A left-handed batter and left-arm spin bowler, Connolly will provide Australia with another spin option, particularly useful given the nature of the Dubai pitch.
Although he has scored 10 runs in three ODIs and is yet to claim a wicket for Australia, his potential in the all-rounder role makes him a promising addition.
Potential Adjustments In Australia’s Line-up
With Short’s absence, Jake Fraser-McGurk, an inexperienced top-order batter, seems the most likely replacement, though Steve Smith might move to the top of the order to partner with Travis Head, introducing an extra bowling option.
All-rounders Sean Abbott and Aaron Hardie are also available in Australia’s 15-player squad, with Tanveer Sangha, the spinner, another option for the semi-final.
Australia qualified for the semi-finals in second place, with four points from three matches.
They will face India, who finished at the top of Group A with six points. The first semi-final will take place on Tuesday in Dubai.
