Co-hosts Canada secured a place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after Stephen Eustaquio netted a dramatic stoppage-time winner against South Africa in Los Angeles.
The narrow victory extended Canada’s remarkable campaign and earned the nation its first appearance in the tournament’s last 16.
Jesse Marsch’s side will next face the winners of the Netherlands-Morocco tie as they continue their historic World Cup journey.
Both teams searched for a breakthrough in an evenly fought encounter, but Canada consistently posed the greater attacking threat.
Eustaquio eventually broke the deadlock by volleying a bouncing ball from the edge of the penalty area into the bottom corner during added time.
The late strike rewarded Canada’s persistence and ended South Africa’s hopes of progressing further in the competition.
South Africa showed flashes of attacking quality during the opening half but lacked precision in the final third.
Canada also came close before the interval, only for Aubrey Modiba to clear Moise Bombito’s header off the line before goalkeeper Ronwen Williams denied Tajon Buchanan with an outstanding save.
Williams continued his impressive display after the break by stopping Tani Oluwaseyi’s effort, while Mbekezeli Mbokazi reacted quickly to prevent the rebound from crossing the line.
Alphonso Davies added fresh energy after coming on in the closing stages and immediately troubled South Africa’s defence with his pace. Eustaquio delivered the decisive moment that carried Canada into the knockout stage.
Although South Africa’s tournament ended in defeat, the team achieved its best-ever World Cup performance by reaching the Round of 32.
Head coach Hugo Broos also became the oldest manager to lead a side in a World Cup knockout match at 74 years and 79 days.
