New Zealand secured a rise to second place in the ICC World Test Championship table after producing a commanding performance against the West Indies in the third and final Test at Mount Maunganui. The convincing win allowed the Black Caps to overtake South Africa, with Australia remaining the only side ahead of them.
The outcome highlighted New Zealand’s strong start to the current World Test Championship cycle.
The match concluded during the latter stages of the final session at Bay Oval when left-arm seamer Jacob Duffy claimed the final wicket, thereby sealing a comprehensive victory. Meanwhile, while chasing an imposing target of 462, the West Indies collapsed for 138 and, as a result, never threatened the pursuit.
In addition to the dominant bowling display, New Zealand produced an outstanding performance with the bat, which was led by openers Devon Conway and captain Tom Latham.
Together, the pair went on to achieve a rare milestone, as they became the first opening combination in Test history to score two centuries each in the same match.
Furthermore, Devon Conway emerged as the standout performer with the bat, registering scores of 227 and 100 to firmly etch his name in the record books.
Consequently, his remarkable effort saw him become the first New Zealander and only the 10th player overall to score both a double century and a century in a single Test, a feat that rightfully earned him the Player of the Match award.
Conway said, “I don’t think it’s sunk in yet. It will take some time for me to get my head around what happened in this Test match. But I’m really glad we got the win.”
Landmark Achievement for Duffy
Duffy led the bowling attack with authority, finishing the innings with figures of 5/42. His consistent excellence throughout the series earned him the Player of the Series honour.
Over the course of the series, Jacob Duffy collected 23 wickets and played a decisive role in New Zealand’s 2-0 triumph. Along the way, he surpassed a long-standing national record previously held by Richard Hadlee.
By claiming his third five-wicket haul of the series, Duffy moved past Hadlee’s tally of 80 wickets, setting a new benchmark for the most wickets taken by a New Zealander in a calendar year.
“I saw that list (most wickets in a calendar year) at lunch time, and there were some cool names on there, so to be up there on any sort of list with those sort of names was special,” Duffy admitted.
New Zealand will next face England in a three-match World Test Championship series scheduled for the middle of next year, a contest expected to have major implications for the standings.
The West Indies remain ninth on the table and will host Sri Lanka and Pakistan in a Test series at home next year as they aim to improve their position.
