BCCI Reshuffles India Squads As Vipraj Nigam Steps In For Injured Chakaravarthy

India will head into their Japan T20I and Asian Games commitments without Varun Chakaravarthy after the leg-spinner suffered a side strain.

The Men’s Selection Committee has selected young leg-spinner Vipraj Nigam to take Chakaravarthy’s place in both squads, the BCCI announced on Wednesday.

The selectors have also altered Nitish Kumar Reddy’s schedule after removing the all-rounder from the Asian Games squad.

Reddy will instead join India’s ODI campaign against the West Indies as the team prepares for a busy home season.

India’s home series against the West Indies will comprise three ODIs followed by five T20Is, with the opening match scheduled for September 27.

Shubman Gill will captain the ODI team, which also includes senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Shreyas Iyer will take charge of the T20I side, with Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma among the players combining youth with experience.

Three Cities to Host ODI Matches

Thiruvananthapuram will stage the opening ODI before the series moves to Guwahati and New Chandigarh.

The T20I fixtures will follow in Lucknow, Ranchi, Indore, Hyderabad and Bengaluru.

Rishabh Pant will lead the Rest of the India side against Ranji Trophy champions Jammu & Kashmir in the Irani Cup, while Sarfaraz Khan will serve as his deputy.

Akash Deep has also made the squad but will play only after completing his fitness assessment.

The selection also includes domestic performers such as Manav Suthar, Saransh Jain, Anukul Roy and Mukesh Kumar.

Following the latest changes, Shreyas Iyer will captain a squad featuring Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Shivam Dube, Tilak Varma, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar and Ravi Bishnoi.

Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Yash Thakur and newly selected Vipraj Nigam complete the updated group.

The changes allow Nigam to step into India’s international setup while the selectors simultaneously prepare separate squads for the West Indies series and the Irani Cup.
