The BCCI on Monday confirmed that India batter Shreyas Iyer has sustained a spleen laceration after suffering a blow to his lower left rib cage while fielding during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.
The injury occurred when Iyer took a diving catch to dismiss Australian wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey. He was immediately rushed to the hospital for evaluation, where doctors admitted him to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for close monitoring.
According to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, Iyer is receiving treatment, is medically stable, and is recovering well.
Saikia further added that the Indian team doctor will remain in Sydney to oversee his progress.
Saikia said in a statement, stated, “Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress.”
Earlier reports from IANS had indicated that specialists would assess Iyer on Monday to determine the next steps in his recovery.
Sources told the agency that the medical team acted swiftly, admitting Iyer to prevent infection from internal bleeding spreading to other organs.
They further added, “Based on what the specialists say after assessing him, he could spend more days in the ICU or be under their close observation for maybe a week.”
Iyer’s parents, Rohini and Santosh Iyer, have applied for emergency visas and plan to travel from Mumbai to Sydney to be with their son during his recovery.
The incident took place in the 33rd over of Australia’s innings, when Alex Carey mistimed a short delivery from Harshit Rana.
Positioned at the backward point, Iyer sprinted back as the ball swirled in the air and dived full length to complete a stunning tumbling catch near deep third man.
