Shreyas Iyer Hospitalised In Sydney After Rib Injury During ODI Against Australia

India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been hospitalised in Sydney after sustaining a left rib cage injury during Saturday’s match at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).

According to sources cited by IANS, Iyer was rushed to the hospital and admitted to the ICU after the incident. He will undergo further evaluation by medical specialists on Monday, who will determine the course of his recovery.

Reports suggest that the decision to hospitalise Iyer was made immediately after his blood pressure and other vital parameters began fluctuating alarmingly. The situation raised concern among team doctors. This prompted swift intervention from the BCCI’s medical team.

“At the hospital, scans revealed internal bleeding due to the fall’s impact, and on discovering that, Iyer was immediately admitted to prevent the risk of infection spreading to other vital organs,” the sources stated.

They further added, “Based on what the specialists say after assessing him, he could spend more days in the ICU or be under their close observation for maybe a week. His family is also kept in the loop, and if needed, they could go to Sydney to be by his side.”

Injury Occurred During Spectacular Catch Attempt

The injury occurred during the 33rd over of Australia’s innings when Alex Carey top-edged a short delivery from Harshit Rana.

Fielding at the backward point, Iyer sprinted back, leapt full-length, and completed a spectacular tumbling catch near deep third man.

Though the effort secured a crucial wicket for India, Iyer immediately clutched his left side in pain. He remained on the ground, visibly struggling after the fall.

Teammates and team physio Kamlesh Jain rushed to assist him off the field.

He did not return to the field for the remainder of the innings. Australia, meanwhile, were dismissed for 236 runs. The innings ended in 46.4 overs.

In India’s reply, the visitors cruised to victory with an unbeaten 168-run partnership between:

• Rohit Sharma (121 not out) and
• Virat Kohli (74 not out)

The 31-year-old batsman is not part of India’s T20I squad for the upcoming series against Australia, which begins on Wednesday.
