The BCCI has entrusted Shreyas Iyer with the responsibility of leading India’s men’s T20I team, bringing an end to Suryakumar Yadav’s stint as captain.
Iyer’s first challenge in charge will come during India’s forthcoming tour of Ireland, followed by a five-match T20I series in England later this summer.
By appointing Iyer, the selectors have signalled their intention to build a leadership group capable of guiding India through the next cycle of international tournaments.
The move comes with an eye on major events scheduled for 2028, including the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and cricket’s return to the Olympic programme in Los Angeles.
Before confirming the appointment, the management reportedly evaluated several options.
Suryakumar remained under consideration, while Hardik Pandya also featured in leadership discussions.
Iyer’s impressive record as a captain across domestic and franchise cricket helped strengthen his candidacy. His ability to unite dressing rooms and deliver results earned widespread admiration from players, coaches, and administrators, making him a strong contender for the role.
The change follows a challenging period with the bat for Suryakumar, despite his achievement of leading India to another T20 World Cup title earlier this year.
The Mumbai batter endured a disappointing IPL campaign, producing modest returns and struggling to make a significant impact throughout the season.
Those performances, combined with India’s long-term planning, contributed to the decision to appoint a new captain.
A Remarkable Comeback for Iyer
Iyer’s rise to the captaincy completes an impressive comeback after he slipped out of India’s T20I plans in late 2023.
Strong displays in domestic cricket and the IPL helped him force his way back into contention, while his success as a leader further enhanced his reputation.
The 31-year-old now becomes India’s 15th men’s T20I captain and will be tasked with maintaining the team’s strong record while shaping the next generation of players.
The appointment underlines India’s commitment to succession planning and marks the beginning of a new chapter in the shortest format.
