India’s Suruchi Singh and Kamaljeet delivered a strong comeback in shooting by winning gold in the mixed 10m air pistol event at the Asian Games.
The Indian pair scored 484.6 points in the final to set an Asian record and secure India’s second gold medal of the Games after the women’s cricket team. Their victory ended India’s wait for a gold medal in shooting.
National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) president Kalikesh Singh Deo praised the shooters for responding strongly after India missed out on medals in several pistol events. He said the mixed team’s performance restored confidence and expressed hope that Indian shooters would continue their strong run in the remaining events.
India had earlier failed to win a medal in the men’s and women’s 10m pistol team events.
Kamaljeet, Kedarling Balakrishna and Aakash Bhardwaj missed the individual final in the men’s 10m air pistol event.
In the women’s team final, Esha Singh, Manu Bhaker and Suruchi Inder Singh narrowly missed the bronze medal against Vietnam. Manu later finished fifth in the individual final.
Kalikesh said India had already collected several medals but needed more gold medals. He added that the NRAI would work with athletes, coaches and the performance team to improve results in future finals.
Manu Bhaker and Esha Singh will next compete alongside 2018 Asian Games champion Rahi Sarnobat in the 25m pistol event.
